I kinda like Day Job. I realize it might be the equivalent of typing I like Samba. I'm sure when you are rinsing the micrograms right out of your head it might be a cold bucket of water. It was before my time and I never had the LIG > DJ experience (7-1-85), so maybe I couldn't build up the proper hate for the song. I think it funny, Garcia twisting all those noses at the same time.

More equivalent to typing that you like US Blues or Liberty...IMO.
I too am a fan of Day Job. Granted, it did tend to get over played for awhile, and I think that is what spawned all of the bashers. Then again, there were alot of other songs that tended to get over exposed when they first started to perform them. Throwin Stones and Sailor / Saint are 2 that come to mind.
I have become a believer of the notion that exists, that any show that had a Day Job tended to be at least an above average show. I know there are exceptions to the rule, but overall, I think the theory holds true in my experience. YMMV, of course!

Lyrically, I also kind of dig it. The problem was that it became one of those songs that you seemed to get every other show and it was not the first pick that came to mind. It really was not the choice to close out the Gloria Richmond show, but so it goes. Also, it seemed like a toss off and derivative of other stuff.

Of course, JOTS and I are the lonely members of the Money, Money fan club (and Loose Lucy).

Not so fast, I'm with you on Loose Lucy. But as for Money, Money you are most assureadly on your own.

Richmond? When they retook the stage for the encore we were hoping for at least a Sugar Mags. But they must have figured we were having too much fun and decided a DJ was the only thing to keep us from exploding with joy, potentially injuring innocent bystanders. Needless to say it worked.

No he's not on his own there was us two and now there are three! Yes 5-19-74 kicks ass! Why are some Deadheads so uptight sometimes? Besides shit it's just a reworking of the money song that's been done a ton of times. Because they put the spin on it being women it's automatically sexist and bad? Whatever. I can think of a helluva lot worse Dead song. WAY WAY worse - anything by Brent or Vince and more

Ha--I only hate it cause you like it...

Seriously; I don't think I've ever heard DJob, nor Samba, but I've always hated MMoney.

;)

Wasn't the sexist thing though--like you say, Pig was way worse on that front--but it seemed sorta silly, or a precurser of the changes coming with Bob by the late 70s maybe? Dunno...but, it really seemed like a superficial Bob contribution relative to HUnter lyrics...snobbish, I know, but after Ace, ie, 73 or so, I just never thought we got much more outta Bob and Barlowe.

I don't completely disagree with your take on Bob/Barlow tunes although I do like Estimated as long as it doesnt have the freak out Bobbly scenes at the end, I like Feel Like a Stranger, and I don't care what anyone says Victim was one of the last interesting songs they ever did.

I'm sure you've seen the awesome Festival Express movie. To me Money Money is just another version of this. Check it out it's smokin

Ah, crap--you got me on the Estimated; that is a good "post my cut off" tune by Bob...good call. And yeah, the "freak outs" at the end of various tunes over the yrs; my wife got to the point of saying "huh?!! only 5 blood curdling screams?! that's a much better Lovelight!"

The way I see it is that when Donna left, the boys had accumulated so many cats who were, by now, deeply masochistic they felt that it only right someone take over the responsibility of, uh, making Morris feel useful.

Never heard a Day Job? You lucky bastard.

I already told JOTS this, but Barlow was at the recent Philip Glass/Henry Miller Library fundraiser at the Warfield and told me (and others) "Everbody knows the other two guys wrote the better songs".

Send me my MM membership card.

The problem I see with MM (and DJ) is that they both, for me, tend to become earwigs(?) rather easily after only one listen. (Actually, I have MM rattlin' 'round me noggin' after just reading the title a moment ago. I guess Ima just a sensitive soul.
